What is the time commitment for players and parents?
Practice begins July 23rd with a week of helmet-only conditioning. Practice is typically 3 nights a week until school begins, and then moves to 2 nights a week. Practice is held at Thurmont Middle School.
What are parents expected to do?
CYA Football and Cheer is a 100% volunteer organization. We rely on the active participation of our parents in several areas. A $175 Commitment Deposit is required to ensure 2 Game Day volunteer slots, fundraising participation and uniform recovery for each child. We also ask that players arrive to practice and games on time and ready to play. Parents are also required to sign a Code of Conduct Waiver, agreeing to represent our teams in a respectful manner.
Who can participate?
Boys and girls entering PreK-8th Grade in the Catoctin School Feeder area are eligible to play.
What equipment is provided?
We are proud to offer one of the area's only all-inclusive sports programs. We provide everything you're child needs to play with the exception of an athletic up and cleats.
How many games are there? Where do we play?
Our teams practice at Thurmont Middle School and play home games at Eyler Field at Eyler Park in Thurmont MD. We will typically play 8-9 games with 4-5 of those played at home. Away games vary but may include Urbana, Linganore, Smithsburg, Boonsboro, Walkersville, Brunswick and more. Field locations can be found at the MVYFL Website.
I'm concerned about safety.
All CYA Football coaches and Team Moms are required to complete a certification in concussion training every season. Many of our coaches attend additional safety and sports training during the off season. While injuries are possible in any sport, our players are instructed on proper, safe techniques for both offense and defensive football play.
It takes a village! Our teams consist of 20-30 kids each and we're always looking for volunteers to help at practices. All coaches are required to complete an application, are subject to a background check and must complete a Concussion Care and Prevention Course.
CYA Football and Cheer is now offering FREE Speed and Agility sessions at the Catoctin High School weight room. Sessions will begin in early March, from 6:45-7:45 PM and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday. The camp is open to all current 5th, 6th and 7th grade boys and girls-whether they will be participating in football or cheer or not so bring a friend!
This is not a weight lifting session. The drills will be focused on developing their core utilizing their own body weight. Some weights may be used but only after an evaluation by coaches. The program was written by the high school strength training coach specifically for these ages.
*Please note: No child under the age of 5th grade will be permitted in the weight room. Please contact Joe McCallion at firstname.lastname@example.org to register or for more information.
CYA offers multiple opportunities throughout the off-season for player conditioning. While we make every effort to offer these for all age groups, these camps require coaching staff and volunteers. If you are interested in helping our organization in this capacity, please contact us!
We love feedback.
We're always looking for ways to better serve our players and their families. Have a suggestion or something you'd like to see on our page? Let us know! We'd love to hear from you.
